Before & After: Kitchen Remodel Delaware County

Some of the warmest and most lasting memories of home are made in kitchens and dining rooms. The whole family comes together in these rooms daily to cook, enjoy meals, and share stories. The team at Lisa Quale Interiors completed a beautiful kitchen remodel for a Delaware County couple, transforming their kitchen and dining room into a warm and appealing space for their family.

Before

The first step in our kitchen design plan was to take down the wall separating the kitchen and dining room, which made the rooms feel more open and airy. The client’s 1950s kitchen had dark wood, a soffit, and dated wall coverings, so we looked for ways to brighten up the kitchen and take advantage of its soft natural light.

We visited the granite yard with our client and she was excited to find beautiful white and gray quartzite that she loved for her countertops. Quartzite is a natural stone that is quickly becoming more popular for kitchen remodels–it looks like marble but is less delicate and porous, which makes it easier to care for. The new quartzite kitchen island creates a place for the kids to do their homework and enjoy family time.

Lighting under the cabinets and tumbled subway tile on the white backsplash give the room a softer look. We installed polished chrome hardware throughout. To add warmth to the white and chrome color scheme, we found rustic wooden stools and stained the floors to match the existing wood floors in the dining room.

In the dining room, we installed an acrylic and chrome chandelier for a glamorous and contemporary feel, and added drapery rods with matching acrylic finials. The table and chairs from Restoration Hardware are suitable for both casual and more formal entertaining, and pinch pleat draperies highlight the large window and match the relaxed roman shade in the kitchen. The indoor-outdoor rug is perfect for dining areas with kids and pets, with a pattern that is trendy but affordable to replace as styles change.

The completed dining room and kitchen design is comfortable and inviting, while also being an elegant space to entertain guests. Our clients love how the rooms flow together to create a place for their family to relax and bond.

Inspiring Before/After Photos: Interior Design Delaware County Pa

The family room is the heart of the home, a place to spend time with loved ones, relax and casually entertain. So when our clients in Wallingford, PA decided it was time to transform their family room into a space they could truly enjoy, the team at Lisa Quale Interiors, a Delaware County PA interior design firm, couldn’t wait to get started.

Before

You can see in the before picture that the room has a fair amount of natural light and great hardwood floors. Not pictured here, (but visible in the later photos) is a beautiful stone fireplace on the right hand side, which we knew would be a perfect focal point. There were a couple of unique challenges in redesigning this room. First, it’s a long and narrow space, which doesn’t allow for much flexibility in furniture placement. And, this older home, like many in Delaware County PA, does not have a separate formal living room, so the interior design plan has to meet both their entertaining and family life needs.

After

Our interior design plan started with a low contrast color scheme of beige and spa blue. To create visual interest, we selected fabrics and draperies with differing, but complementary textures and patterns. To make this family room feel larger, we hung silk curtains in a shade only slightly darker than the walls and had a rug in a custom size installed.

To highlight this older home’s traditional style, we added crown molding and custom millwork above the fireplace to surround the mounted television. In selecting furnishings, we opted for classic pieces like these wooden end tables with turned legs, which beautifully suit one of our client’s favorite pieces, the secretary desk. The finished room delivers exactly what our clients wanted, a relaxing and luxurious space that was still comfortable enough for everyday use.

Client Testimonial

“Thank you for creating my perfect space! It’s the serene spot where I go to curl up with a good book, the inviting room where we welcome friends to spend time enjoying each other’s company, and the family retreat for Friday movie nights. Our family room has absolutely become the heart of our home. It’s beautiful, comfortable, peaceful, and inviting… all I wanted and more. I love it!” – Liz, Wallingford, Delaware County PA

Tips For Keeping Your Home Renovation On Budget

posted in: Blog | 0

interior design wilmington de

After careful consideration, you’ve decided to remodel part of your home to create a more inviting and functional space that better suits both your lifestyle and your personal style. But, before you start demolition, you need make some decisions regarding your budget. Deciding how much you’d like to spend and learning how to control your budget are critical steps in the remodel planning process. As a leading interior design firm serving Wilmington, DE, we’d like to share a few tips that help our clients stay within budget.

  1. Make a detailed plan and stick to it. At Lisa Quale Interiors, we guide our clients through the process of developing a cohesive and complete plan. Then, we create drawings that capture the details of your renovation. These drawings are a very clear way of communicating precisely what you’re looking for so your remodeling contract  is complete and accurate before any construction starts. Setting clear expectations and making sure everything is included in the bid minimizes change-orders, a common and costly budget buster.

  1. Know where to splurge and where to save. Investing in the wrong big-ticket items is an easy way to go over budget. To get the most out of your money while still achieving a sophisticated look, it’s important to know which items are worth investing in and which aren’t. At Lisa Quale Interiors, we’ll help you determine where your money is best spent and what you’re comfortable with when it comes to saving. Are you willing to spend a little more to make it eco-friendly? Do you focus on details rather than the big picture? Part of our listening phase includes talking through these spending questions so we get a feel for your priorities and preferences.

  1. Don’t forget decor.  There is more to a renovation than construction materials and labor. Most people are so focused on the contractor’s numbers that they forget to budget for things like window treatments, barstools, art, and accessories. We make sure the decorative part of the budget doesn’t get forgotten so your remodel looks the way it should in the end.

  1. Budget for surprises. It’s rare that you can do a remodeling project without running into unexpected costs. Make sure you have enough of a contingency in your budget that you can pay for whatever surprises that arise.  We recommend saving 10-20% of your budget for hidden water damage, dated wiring, lack of insulation, and other non-elective expenses.

What to Expect During Your Design Consultation

posted in: Blog | 0

The initial consultation with Main Line designer, Lisa Quale, is the first step towards transforming your home. Here’s what you can expect during this exciting, interactive meeting for exploring possibilities.

In advance of the appointment, we will send you a questionnaire to get started on the process and make our valuable time together as effective as possible. The questionnaire addresses your household’s functional needs for things like entertaining or pets, as well as your personal style, color, and pattern preferences.

All adult decision makers in the household should attend our first meeting so everyone has a voice and understanding of the process. We’ll talk about your goals for your project so I can begin to formulate a direction for the design. Meanwhile, I will explain my design process and give you the opportunity to ask any and all questions.

If time allows, photographs and measurements will be taken.

The initial design consultation differs depending upon the project at hand. Below, see what you can expect for construction & remodeling project consultations, DIY consultations, and decorating consultations.

Construction & Remodeling Consultations

This one-hour meeting is about determining if we’re a good match. If our schedules don’t align, it’s best to know early, so you’re free to pursue a designer who can work with your timeline. In addition, we’ll go over any Pinterest or Houzz inspiration boards you’ve been collecting, discussing the specific elements that you’d like to see in your remodel. We’ll review the next steps of the project, and afterwards, I will draft a proposal with an estimate of the hours and resources necessary to complete it.

DIY Consultations

Even if you prefer to complete your project on your own, a consultation with Main Line Designer, Lisa Quale is invaluable. Based upon our conversation, we will draft an executable plan with the guidance you need to feel confident about your DIY remodeling or decorating project. After meeting in your home to discuss your needs, goals, and dilemmas for 1 or 2 rooms, you’ll receive a detailed follow-up report with our solutions.

In general, you can expect a DIY consultation to last one to two hours, with an additional two hours to create your plan.

Decorating Consultations

Unlike remodeling consultations, decorating consultations are working meetings during which the focus is strictly design. You may be invited to review photos so I can define your personal style. When couples have different preferences, this time is especially vital.

Budgeting for furniture can be daunting, since quality, details, and customization widely influence price. To make the process easier, I’ll bring a spreadsheet that explains pricing for various levels of quality, empowering you to decide on a comfortable budget for each item. After discussing, I will draft a consultation summary detailing all of the items you need and a budget range for each.

We’ll discuss how we’ll work together to complete your project as well as the time and resources that will be needed.

Our design consultations are tailored to determine your unique style and address the functional and budgetary aspects of the project. It’s an excellent start to designing a distinctive space you’ll be proud to call your own.
