A Kitchen Designed for Real Life

For this busy young family in Glen Mills, PA, the goal was to completely rethink their kitchen and laundry room so the spaces could work harder for their family.  As a kitchen designer in Glen Mills, Lisa Quale Interiors looks beyond the finishes to consider how your family actually lives. In this renovation, that meant starting with the floor plan and reimagining the way the spaces connected and functioned.

The result is a kitchen that feels larger, works better, and has plenty of personality, along with a bright and hardworking laundry room that feels like it has always been there.

“Lisa designed our kitchen, dining, laundry room and bathroom and did an amazing job. From material, lighting and redesigning the layout of the rooms, she nailed our desired aesthetic while retaining all the functionality of the spaces. We absolutely love our new spaces and look forward to future projects with her!”

A Smarter Layout Makes Room for Family Life

The original kitchen layout wasn’t making the best use of the available space. We completely reworked the floor plan and relocated the laundry room, allowing the kitchen to become a more efficient galley-style layout.

That change opened up room for a peninsula with seating for four that’s useful for both big holiday get-togethers and everyday life. With the separate dining table nearby, the family can use the peninsula for meals and leave kid’s art projects at the table. Dinner won’t have to wait for the crayons and construction paper to be cleared away anymore.

Original Character, Reimagined

One of the most distinctive elements of the old kitchen was the home’s original shiplap wainscoting. Rather than removing it, we embraced it by expanding it around the kitchen window and beneath the peninsula seating area.

Then we painted it a deep indigo blue pulled from the kitchen’s backsplash tile.  The result is bold and unexpected, but also connected to the character of the home.  The dark indigo paint is also practical in this family kitchen, disguising the everyday scuffs that come with life with young children.

Details with Personality

The kitchen’s dark-stained cabinetry is a warm contrast to the colorful tile and blue wainscoting.  The backsplash features scrolling brushwork tiles with a hand-painted quality.  Unique light fixtures add another layer of personality, making the kitchen feel collected rather than predictable.

We found a new purpose for a piece the family already loved. Their existing kitchen hutch was transformed into a custom coffee built-in.  We tucked it into an alcove with a new stone countertop and tile backsplash.  The upper portion was separated and installed as upper cabinets.

We also created a dedicated wood storage niche near their wood-fired stove, moving the firewood out of the sunroom and creating a purposeful place to store it within the kitchen.

A Laundry Room That Works Hard and Looks Good

Relocating the laundry room gave us the opportunity to completely rethink this hardworking space.  The original laundry room was dark, dated, and offered very little storage. The new laundry room is brighter and more functional, with a laundry sink and dedicated cabinetry.

The backsplash tile echoes the hand-painted quality of the kitchen tile while giving the laundry room its own personality.

Even the flooring has a story.  The original laundry room had laminate flooring in a basket weave faux-brick pattern. We took that idea and made it real by replacing the laminate with herringbone brick tile flooring.  It’s a thoughtful nod to the home’s history while giving the renovated spaces a fresh, updated feel.

A Home That Feels More Like Them

This renovation wasn’t about following a trend or creating a showpiece that looks beautiful in photographs.  It was about making this particular home work better for this particular family.  The result is a home that feels more personal, more practical, and more enjoyable to live in.
