Transforming an 1896 Victorian Fixer-Upper in Ardmore, PA

My clients had been wanting to move to a historic home walkable to a Main Line downtown for a while.  When the perfect diamond in the rough, fixer-upper with amazing bones came on the market in Ardmore, PA, they jumped at the chance.  They knew this project was a big undertaking and wanted an Interior Designer to help turn this classic Victorian home into their dream home.  With only a few months until the family moved in, we set to work laying out a vision for the house, and a team of contractors got to work transforming the house into a gorgeous, peaceful haven.

The house’s history takes center stage in the foyer with an original fireplace and beautiful stained glass windows.  The gold leaf light fixture and calm painting fit my clients’ elegant, feminine style perfectly.

The butler’s pantry still had the original cabinetry but had been turned into a laundry room that needed a lot of work.  We restored the cabinetry and made this space feel light and bright with pale blue wallpaper.

The powder room bath, once patterned and very pink, is now calm and glamorous in pale blue, nickel, and marble.

A new chandelier and billowy roman shades made this dining room go from dark and heavy to light and airy.  We used the clients’ dining set, with reupholstered chairs.  An area rug, wispy art, a fresh new nickel chandelier and ceiling medallion finish out the space.

Wallpaper was removed throughout the house, and every room and piece of trim was painted.  The antique heart pine floors were lovingly repaired and given a much needed refinishing. The previous homeowner had replaced the light fixtures at some point in the 80’s with Home Depot specials, so replacing every light fixture in this home was the thing that most dramatically changed the house.  I found so many beautiful, historic styled-fixtures to give this house a unique elegance.  The client says everyone who visits remarks on the beautiful lighting.

Because the clients are a pretty blond and her husband, Ken, the contractors on the job started calling the house “Barbie’s Dream House.”  I can’t think of a better name for it.
